-The 2019 Renegade Warhammer 40,000 Narrative Event: The Battle for Antrim IV

+++ Start Time: 10:00am (Registration starts at 9am)
Location: Conference Room G (Lower Level)
Cost: $30 per player
Max Players: 16 +++

The second-annual Battle for Antrim IV will be two separate all-day events, played on Friday and Saturday. The game will consist of three boards: Two starships, and a blasted cityscape. All three tables will utilize interactive objectives (teleportariums that actually allow units to be moved from one table to another, for instance), as well as Sealed Orders—thematic, custom-designed strategic objectives personalized for each player and only opened just before the game begins. This event will be a bit larger than last year’s inaugural version, with two ships dueling it out in orbit while their ground forces slug it out on the third table. The game will last most of the day, starting at 9 AM, with a scheduled break for meals as appropriate.
Narrative rules will be utilized except in certain exceptional cases (summoning and the like), so models usually only utilized in Open Play (custom Land Raiders or Looted Vehicles from Chapter Approved, for instance) are authorized. There will be sixteen players per event, divided into teams of eight.

What to expect: Zone Mortalis tiles and other stage dressings presenting a beautiful shipboard battle, with new and vintage Games Workshop and Forge World terrain creating an immersive gaming space planetside. Objectives that actually make a difference to the player holding them, and can impact the course of the game. A gaming experience with friends and strangers that lasts most of a day that you’ll look back on with great memories, and a chance to break out and dust off some rarely-used miniatures, whether it’s that Warhound Titan or Knight Household you haven’t managed to fit into a regular game of 40K lately, or a that custom conversion you’ve always wanted to see take the field.

What you’ll need: Your Renegade badge, the event fee, and your painted 40K army. This time, Antrim IV is getting bigger. Not only are we adding a second starship to the mix, we’re scaling up the cityfight. Armies in orbit will be 2000 points, with the constraint that the models must be able to all fit in the Zone Mortalis (standard dreadnought bases being the maximum base size to fit through the wider corridors, while 40mm Terminator bases being the largest to fit through the narrower chokepoints), while the cityfight board will be rising to 4500 points. A huge epic battle will be fought, with the ships being able to fire down onto the tabletop or at each other, macrocannon emplacements that can fire back in response, and a fully-painted environment where your armies will be slugging it out. You’ll be telling stories about this experience for years to come.

Fortifications will be provided for the cityfight defenders as available, and there’s a rules set with tailored stratagems for each battlespace. Team assignments will be made well in advance of the event, so you’ll be able to coordinate with your teammates in advance, but you’ll be receiving your Sealed Orders on the day of the event, so expect even your allies to give you a few surprises. The rules set is tested and constantly being improved upon and streamlined, but will leverage Games Workshop’s strong narrative efforts published in supplements like Urban Conquest and Chapter Approved.

We do perform a vetting of lists to ensure a fair and enjoyable narrative experience for all concerned, but we do so lightly. The aim of this event is to play a game of 40K where you use and see models you might never otherwise see on the table because of the environments you’re fighting in and the size of the battle, to provide a gaming experience you’ll tell your friends about and look back on and smile.

And, yes. There will be prizes.

If you intend to participate in the competitive tournament, we suggest registering for the Friday iteration of the Narrative Event. If you’re not playing in the tournament, we suggest registering for Saturday’s version.

Ch-ch-ch-ch changes … /rules/ch-ch-ch-ch-changes/ Sat, 10 Mar 2018 17:10:58 +0000 /?p=4099 Greetings to one and all!

Today we are announcing sweeping changes to the Renegade 40k Format.
The big picture changes are:

1. Primary Missions have been altered to be scored Progressively.
2. Sadly Table Quarters as a Primary Mission has been retired.
3. We now offer a new Primary Mission, “Supply Grab”
4. A reduction in points for army construction back to 1650 Points with 3 Detachments.

The reduction comes about again thanks to data collected at our last event.
“Naturally” completed games are those that get through Battle Round(Game Turn) 6 or Tabled/Conceded.
A total of 288 games were played (96 players, 6 games each).
60% of games (173) played FAILED to complete “naturally”.
25% Completed (72 Games) by Tabled/Conceded.
15% Completed (41 Games) by ending on Battle Round 6.
This was played at 2000 Points, and with 3 Detachments.

Compared to the previous year’s (7th Ed) Completed games of 90+% this represents a huge step back in game play for players. As such we have looked to returning to lower points to allow players to complete more games in less time and enjoy more free time between rounds without impacting the tournament schedule or trying to encourage players to play “faster” either through penalties or the use of a timing device.

More to come later today on the Missions themselves and how to score them. So stay tuned!

Why play in Combat Patrol? /rules/why-play-in-combat-patrol/ Tue, 07 Nov 2017 20:23:09 +0000 /?p=3751 Warhammer 40k is a game which quite often takes players over 3 hours to complete a single match. Even time restricted tournament play is limited to 2.5 hours. But what if you have that itch to play a game of Warhammer and you’re pressed for time. Can Warhammer 40k be scaled down to just an hour?

The answer is yes, and the variant is called Combat Patrol. Combat Patrol is a 400 point match of Warhammer played on a 48” x 48” play surface, and uses the same ruleset as standard Warhammer 40k, with a few differences. Rather than pitting whole armies against each other, Combat Patrol represents smaller, more focused groups of soldiers in small skirmishes.

The result has been a fast paced game where players run small patrols that makes for a quicker and more casual game than core Warhammer 40k. It allows players to complete a game within an hour, and play many games in the time it would take for a single game of a 2,000 point game of Warhammer 40k.

When creating the Combat Patrol rules, the Renegade staff had to have a vision for what we wanted the game to be. Combat Patrol has existed for many years, in particular at Adepticon. In past versions of Combat Patrol, players were limited to 1 HQ, 3 troops, 1 Fast Attack, 1 Heavy and 1 Elites, with 1 flex unit that could be a troop, FA, Heavy or Elite. Monstrous creatures were not allowed. Models with more than 2 wounds that were not troops were not allowed. Vehicles could not have a combined armor rating of more than 33. These rules worked well for 7th edition and earlier, however, with 8th edition, changes had to be made.

The goal of the Renegade Open was to make an 8th edition Combat Patrol that was balanced and fit the theme of a small skirmish. The first decision was to allow HQs or not. With the power level and roles that HQ units provide in 8th edition, and the vision we had for Combat Patrol, it was decided that HQs should not be allowed. The idea of an army commander, and the aura bonuses provided by most HQs did not fit the vision, or balance of Combat Patrol. Lords of war were an obvious exclusion for the same reasons. It was also decided that flyers did not fit these criteria.

The next challenge was to determine how strong single models could be. The old system simply restricted wounds, then restricted armor facings. However, 8th got rid of armor facings and replaced hull points with wounds and higher toughness. Keeping the same restrictions on wounds would eliminate all vehicles, and we didn’t want that. Light dedicated transports were always allowed, and we wanted that to continue. But we didn’t want to allow some of the tougher midrange units like Dreadnaughts, Kastelan Robots and Carnifexes.

So, we came up with a toughness + wounds restriction and limited models to having a combined total of those two values of 12 or less. This allows for light walkers such as sentinels, which have always been allowed, but kept out the tougher ones. We then decided that dedicated transports specifically could go up to 17.

Finally, we decided that Combat Patrol should use one specific detachment. Though 8th edition already has the patrol detachment, it didn’t fit the restrictions that Combat Patrol was supposed to have. So we made a specific combat Patrol detachment and gave it no bonus command points. Players will have the base 3 for having a battleforged army.

After much playtesting of this ruleset, we decided we were pretty happy with the system. It’s a lot of fun and we greatly recommend 40k players give it a try. It’s a great system for teaching new players how to play. We’re very excited for the Combat Patrol tournament on Friday November 17th. There’s still plenty of room, so sign up now.

Science Fiction

If ever a category was well represented at Renegade, this is the one! Warhammer 40K, Infinity, Star Wars… surprise us. Lets see your Reaper miniatures from the  Chronoscope line or some Mechs!
